About Me

I started my journey at the age of 8. The call of rhythm and a strong backing from my Family saw me placed under the able guidance of Sri Nagaraj Rao Gaikwad, a very inspiring and knowledgeable Tabla Teacher in Bangalore.

A young and dynamic musician, I was quick to enter the Concert Arena and have received critical acclaim for my performances in India and Abroad.

My artistry lies in the capability to accompany Hindustani Vocal and Instrumental Music with equal ease, at the same time feeling very much at home in presenting the truly traditional Tabla Solo format. My forte also lies in blending my style with the dynamism of Fusion and World Music, and the complicated Mathematics of Carnatic Music

Pandit Rajgopal Kallurkar

If it had’t been for the call of the tabla, Pt. Kallurkar might have continued his family’s priestly vocation in Kallur, a little town in Raichur district of northern Karnataka. When he was 15, the beauty of the tabla captivated him, and led him to Dharwad. In that musically vibrant city, Pandit Girish Avte, professor of tabla, Karnataka College, laid a firm foundation for Pt. Kallurkar’s percussive imagination. Impressed by his devotion, the master threw open to him the secrets of tabla playing, both solo and accompaniment. Every year, Pt. Kallurkar honors Pandit Avte’s memory by organizing a concert.

Pt. Kallurkar did six – year music course from Karnatak University and earned the Sangeeta Ratna degree. During this period, he picked up the nuances of rhythm from some of the most revered names in Hindustani music. He then took up the Karnataka government’s tabla Vidwat exam, and won the first rank. His other academic achievements include a master’s degree in Sanskrit, and the Sangeetha Alankar degree from Gandharva Maha Mandal, Mumbai.

In 1986, Pt. Kallurkar’s musical quest took him to Hyderabad, where Ustad Sheikh Dawood Khan lived. The legendary tabla maestro accepted him as a disciple, and trained him rigorously for five years. Thanks to that stint, Pt. Kallurkar’s robust fingers acquired polish and subtlety. On his return to Dharwad, Pt. Kallurkar founded the Kallur Mahalakshmi Tabla Vidyalaya and become principal. He now teaches, and plays regularly on radio, television and on stage. Vocalists admire Pt. Kallurkar for his sensitive accompanying style. His solo performances are a fine blend of the scholar and the artiste in him. The Joy of tabla is Pt. Kallurkar’s solo album.

Pt. Kallurkar serves as a member of the Karnataka government’s music textbook committee. He is also on the panel of examiners for tabla exams conducted by the Karnataka State Music Education Board.
